Shaboozey

Shaboozey Biography

Shaboozey is the stage name of Nigerian-American singer and songwriter Collins Obinna Chibueze who rose to global fame in 2024 with the release of his chart‑topping single A Bar Song (Tipsy). His music blends country, Americana and hip hop, creating a fresh sound that helped bring a new audience into the country genre. He gained wider recognition after appearing on the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and later contributing to Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album, which further cemented his name in mainstream pop and country circles.

Childhood

Shaboozey was born Collins Obinna Chibueze on May 9, 1995 in Woodbridge, Virginia, a suburb in the Washington metropolitan area, to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent. His father worked as a farmer in Nigeria before moving to Texas and later to Virginia, while his mother worked as a nurse. During his early years he split time between the United States and Nigeria, spending two years at a boarding school in Nigeria during junior high, which exposed him to a mix of Nigerian and American cultures that later influenced his music.

Education

Shaboozey attended Gar‑Field Senior High School in Woodbridge, where he played football his freshman year and gradually focused more on creative pursuits. Before committing fully to a music career he also explored writing and filmmaking, originally planning to be a novelist and later founding a production company called V Picture Films. The combination of high school experience, hands‑on work shooting music videos and photography and early gigs helped shape his artistic direction and gave him practical training beyond the classroom.

Career

Shaboozey began releasing music in the mid‑2010s, issuing his first single Jeff Gordon in 2014 and following it with the debut album Lady Wrangler in 2018 on Republic Records. He first gained national attention after co‑writing and singing the hook on Duckwrth’s Start a Riot, which appeared on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack. In 2022 he released Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die, and then broke through worldwide with his 2024 album Where Ive Been, Isnt Where Im Going, powered by the single A Bar Song (Tipsy). The track spent nineteen weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped multiple country and pop charts, making him one of the most talked about artists in modern country and pop music.

Family Life

Shaboozey maintains a relatively private personal life and has not publicly spoken in detail about long term romantic partners or children. He has emphasized the importance of family in interviews, often crediting his Nigerian‑American upbringing and his parents for shaping his values and work ethic. While he keeps his relationships out of the spotlight for the most part, he occasionally shares glimpses of his home life and close ties to his family in social media posts and live performances.

Achievements

Shaboozey has collected numerous honors and milestones over a short span of years, including a Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for his collaboration Amen with Jelly Roll. His single A Bar Song (Tipsy) earned multiple Billboard Music Awards and topped the Billboard Hot 100, Country Airplay and several international charts, also earning Diamond and multi‑platinum certifications. He has also been recognized at the People’s Choice Country Awards and iHeartRadio Music Awards, and has become a frequent performer at major live events and halftime shows, solidifying his status as a breakout star in both country and pop music.

Controversies

As a young artist crossing from hip hop and alternative spaces into mainstream country, Shaboozey has faced some skepticism and debate about where he fits within the genre, especially in more traditional country circles. Some critics have questioned whether his blend of rap, trap and country really belongs in the country format, while others have praised him for expanding the genre’s boundaries. Despite these discussions, he has remained focused on his sound and storytelling, using the attention to highlight representation and diversity in contemporary country music.

Shaboozey Summary

Shaboozey stands out as a genre‑blurring artist who has taken country music into new territory with his Nigerian‑American roots, hip hop influences and storytelling style. From his Virginia upbringing and Nigerian schooling to his chart‑smashing success with A Bar Song (Tipsy) and major collaborations, he has carved a unique space in the music industry. As he continues to tour, release new music and partner with global brands, Shaboozey is shaping the future of country and pop with a sound that reflects both tradition and modern culture.
