Paul Okon rose from Sydney streets to European glory and became a Socceroos legend and respected coach.
Paul Okon early career and European success with Club Brugge and Lazio
Paul Okon was born on April 5, 1972, in Sydney, Australia, where he began his football journey with Marconi Stallions in the National Soccer League. His exceptional talent was evident early, as he won the Under 21 Player of the Season award in both 1990 and 1991. At just 18 years old, he made his senior debut for the Australian national team in 1991, marking the beginning of an impressive international career.
In 1991, Paul Okon moved to Europe at age 19, signing with Club Brugge in Belgium. This transfer proved transformative, as he quickly established himself as one of the league's premier midfielders. During his five-year spell with Club Brugge, he won the Belgian Pro League title in 1996, along with two Belgian Cup victories and three Belgian Supercup titles. His crowning individual achievement came in 1995 when he became the first non-European player to win the Belgian Golden Shoe award.
From Marconi Stallions youth star to Socceroos captain and Oceania champion
Following his success in Belgium, Paul Okon attracted interest from top European clubs. In 1996, he signed with Italian giants Lazio, becoming one of the first Australians to play in Serie A, then considered the world's best league. During his three years with Lazio, he won the Coppa Italia in 1998 and the Supercoppa Italiana, while also reaching the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final in 1999. He spent a season on loan at Fiorentina before moving to England in 2000.
His English career included stints with Middlesbrough, Watford, and Leeds United, though injuries began to limit his playing time. Paul Okon returned to Australia in 2006 to join Newcastle Jets in the newly formed A-League, playing one final season before retiring in 2007. Throughout his club career, he demonstrated versatility by playing as both a defender and midfielder, showcasing his tactical intelligence and technical abilities.
National team caps and 2000 Oceania Nations Cup victory
Paul Okon earned 28 caps for the Socceroos between 1991 and 2003, serving as captain during several important campaigns. His international career included participation in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, where he captained the Australian Olympic team to the semi-finals. This achievement highlighted his leadership qualities and ability to perform on the biggest stages early in his career.
One of his proudest international moments came in 2000 when Australia won the Oceania Nations Cup, with Paul Okon playing a crucial role in the tournament victory. He also represented Australia at the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Korea and Japan, where the Socceroos finished in third place. His contributions to Australian football were recognized with his induction into the Football Australia Hall of Fame in 2009.
Coaching career development and Central Coast Mariners managerial role
After retiring from professional football, Paul Okon immediately transitioned into coaching, dedicating himself to developing the next generation of Australian players. He began with youth coaching roles, eventually becoming head coach of the Australia U20 team in 2012. During his four-year tenure with the Young Socceroos, he helped develop talented players including Daniel De Silva, Josh Brillante, Jamie Maclaren, and Stefan Mauk.
In 2016, he was appointed head coach of Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, taking over a team that had finished last in the previous season. Despite his extensive knowledge of young players and understanding of Australian football, he left the club in 2018 after disagreements with the board over the club's direction. He later served as assistant coach at Club Brugge and joined the Socceroos coaching staff in 2024, continuing his lifelong commitment to Australian football development.
