Michelle Biography
Michelle Obama is an American attorney, author, and former First Lady of the United States who served alongside her husband Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. She is widely recognized as the first African American woman to hold the role of First Lady and has become a global advocate for education, health, and women’s empowerment. Childhood
Michelle Obama was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17 1964 in Chicago Illinois. She grew up with her parents Fraser Robinson III and Marian Shields and her older brother Craig in a modest household on the South Side of Chicago. From an early age she was encouraged to value education and hard work which helped her become a top student in local public schools.
Education
Michelle was class salutatorian at Whitney Young Magnet High School in Chicago before enrolling at Princeton University in 1981. At Princeton she earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology with a minor in African American studies graduating cum laude in 1985. She then attended Harvard Law School where she obtained a Juris Doctor in 1988 building the legal foundation for her early professional career.
Career
After law school Michelle worked as an associate at the Chicago law firm Sidley Austin where she advised corporate clients and mentored summer intern Barack Obama. She later shifted from corporate law into public service and community work including roles in the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and as executive director of the nonprofit Public Allies. She also served as associate dean of student services at the University of Chicago and later as vice president for community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Family Life
Michelle married Barack Obama in 1992 at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. The couple have two daughters Malia and Natasha Sasha Obama and have often spoken about maintaining a close family life despite intense public scrutiny. During Barack Obama’s presidency the family lived in the White House where Michelle focused on balancing her public duties with parenting and household routines.
