Ken Paxton

Ken Paxton Biography

Ken Paxton is the 51st Attorney General of Texas, serving as the state's top law enforcement officer since January 5, 2015. He gained national prominence as a staunch conservative leader who has filed numerous lawsuits challenging federal regulations, defending Texas interests on immigration policy, and supporting former President Donald Trump's legal initiatives including the effort to overturn the 2020 election results. Paxton leads over 4,000 employees across 38 divisions and 117 offices throughout Texas, with nearly 750 attorneys handling more than 30,000 cases annually covering everything from consumer fraud protection to child support enforcement.

Childhood

Warren Kenneth Paxton Jr. was born on December 23, 1962, at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota to Warren and Sally Paxton, an Air Force veteran couple. As the son of a military family, Paxton spent his formative years in various locations before settling in Texas. His father's career in the United States Air Force shaped his early life experiences and instilled values of service and discipline that would later influence his political career. The family eventually made McKinney, Texas their home city, where Paxton would later establish his law practice and begin his political journey.

Education

Paxton attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1985 and subsequently completed a Master of Business Administration in 1986. During his time at Baylor, he served as student body president, demonstrating early leadership abilities. He then pursued his legal education at the University of Virginia School of Law, receiving his Juris Doctor degree in 1991. His comprehensive educational background combining psychology, business administration, and law provided him with diverse skills that would prove valuable throughout his career in private practice and public office.

Career

After law school, Paxton worked as an attorney at Strasburger and Price from 1991 to 1995, then served as in-house legal counsel for J.C. Penney Company before founding his own law firm in McKinney where he practiced for 14 years. He also worked as a management consultant for Arthur Andersen from 1986 to 1988. His political career began in 2002 when he was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives, representing House District 70 for a decade. In 2012, he was elected to the Texas State Senate for District 8 covering Collin and Dallas counties. His election as Attorney General in 2014 marked by a Tea Party wave transformed him into a national conservative figure, and he won re-election in both 2018 and 2022.

Family Life

Paxton met his wife Angela while they were both students at Baylor University, and the couple married in 1986. Angela Paxton became a Texas State Senator for District 8 and previously worked as a teacher and guidance counselor at Legacy Christian Academy in Frisco. The couple has four children named Tucker, Abby, Mattie, and Katie. They are active members of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. However, their marriage faced significant challenges when Angela filed for divorce in 2025 alleging infidelity, which Paxton acknowledged had strained their relationship due to the pressures of public life while requesting privacy for their family.

Achievements

As Attorney General, Paxton established a special unit dedicated to combating human trafficking in Texas, marking his first major initiative in the office. He has won significant legal victories for Texas on immigration policy, school choice rights, Environmental Protection Agency regulations, and religious freedom cases. His office enforces open government laws, provides legal advice to state officials, and represents Texas in court matters. Under his leadership, the Attorney General's office has handled over 30,000 cases annually while protecting Texans against consumer fraud and enforcing child support orders across the state.

Controversies

Paxton's tenure has been marked by multiple high-profile scandals including a securities fraud indictment just eight months after taking office in 2015, accusing him of persuading investors to invest in a technology firm while failing to disclose he earned commissions. The nearly decade-long legal battle concluded in 2025 with a settlement requiring nearly $300,000 in restitution without admission of guilt. In 2023, he survived impeachment proceedings initiated by the Texas House, being suspended from his role temporarily before being acquitted by the Texas Senate after a nine-day trial focused on allegations he misused his position to benefit a real estate investor. He also faced criticism for his role in filing the unsuccessful Texas v. Pennsylvania case at the Supreme Court challenging the 2020 election results and speaking at the January 6, 2021 rally preceding the Capitol attack.

Ken Paxton Summary

Ken Paxton remains one of Texas most prominent and controversial conservative politicians, having served as Attorney General since 2015 while navigating multiple legal challenges and scandals. His career encompasses private legal practice, a decade in the Texas House, two years in the State Senate, and nearly a decade leading Texas law enforcement. Known for his aggressive litigation strategy against federal policies and strong support for Donald Trump, he has positioned himself as a leading Republican voice on national conservative issues while facing ongoing scrutiny over his personal conduct and business dealings during public service.
